Want to see one of my favorite home decorating projects?
A while back I saw a bunch of cool rooms on Pinterest that had a feature wall with a random collection of letters on a it. I fell in love. I have a thing for words and letters (my fridge is covered in those alphabet magnets just for my enjoyment), so I decided to create a letter wall in my apartment.
I bought an assortment of wooden and paper mâché letters from JoAnn and picked out a color scheme (lime green, black, brown, white, and khaki). The letters I originally bought spelled out my name, my boyfriend’s, my roommates’s and her boyfriend’s, but I’ve added a few letters over the years.
It was an easy project, but I’ll be honest–I never got around to the shellacking. I’ll do it one of these days 🙂 It will make dusting SO much easier. If you decide to make a wall of your own, here’s what you’ll need:
- acrylic paints
- foam brushes
- picture hangers (from Home Depot)
- a can of shellac
- a large garbage bag (or two, depending upon how many letters you’re painting)
- blue painters tape (this is my secret little trick)
When I did the project I laid all the letters out in an arrangement I liked on the garbage bags and picked the color based on proximity. I used about 3-4 coats of paint per letter, the wooden letters took more paint. To make painting simpler, stick push pins on the back of the letters so they are raised. Check out the original idea here. This was a multi-day project, meaning there were letters all over my living room floor for a few days. If you have pets, you’ll need to find a better place to leave your letters while they’re drying.
Once everything was dry, I hung them up on the wall using a combination of the tape and the picture hangers. I used the blue painters tape to hold up the letters in my new apartment so I didn’t have to put a ton of holes in the wall. I only needed to use a few picture hangers for the heavier, wooden letters.
This is one of my favorite parts of the apartment and it looks especially great on our high ceilings. What do you think? What’s your favorite design element in your home?
